What are the differences between US and Imperial system. I know some (e.g. US gallon is smaller) but don't have a complete list. Can anyone give me a full list?
Also, any comments on why US is different, as it was originally based on the English system.

Our forum has been available for many years. In September 2014 we decided to switch it to read-only mode. US volumetric measure is based on older Queen Anne gallon and Winchester bushel adopted in the UK in 1707. The early US ignored the imperial gallon adopted in the UK in 1824, retaining the older versions. The US gallon is 231 in^3, or 3.7854 L, the Imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. The US bushel is 2150.42 in^3 or 35.239 L; the Imperial bushel is 8 Imperial gallons. All submultiples of the gallon and bushel differ by these ratios between US and UK systems.
The US never used the stone, weighing 14 lbs. As a result, the US hundredweight is 100 lbs while the UK is 112 lbs. This also affcts the US ton (2000 lbs) vs UK ton (2240 lbs)
The inch and the pound were minutely different before a meeting in 1958 that reconciled their values.

rough rule of thumb......imperial gallon approximately 20% larger that the us gal.
